students running

St. Mary School Swormville students enjoyed one of their favorite days of the school year earlier this October - Marathon Day!

Organized by the school's Home School Association (HSA) and run by parent volunteers, the HSA Sister Sheila Marathon is a fun fitness activity for all students at St. Mary's, from the littlest 3, 4 & 5 year olds in our Pre-K & Montessori classrooms, on up through the 8th grade students. All students who participate try to reach for their personal best distance, or highest number of "laps" around the marathon course. Post marathon, students are able to enjoy some water and fresh fruit to re-hydrate and relax for a moment before returning to class for the day.

This year, students raised a total of $7,588.00, making this one of the most successful fundraisers of the year for the St. Mary School HSA! Marathon proceeds help to fund the activities & events hosted by the HSA throughout the school year. Each student had a goal of raising $30, and each class that raised 100% or more of its total class goal will receive a dress-down day, which EVERY CLASS achieved this year. Way to go Bees!!!

Sr. Sheila Anne Burke, OSF, whom the Marathon is named in memory of, was the beloved principal at St. Mary School for many years. She died suddenly in June of 2014, but was a selfless servant and friend who dedicated her life to Catholic education and generations of students at St. Mary's School.

The HSA would like to thank all of the parent volunteers, student participants, and of course the generous donors whose contributions help make this event a success year after year. Even some alumni parents continue to help out - THANK YOU ALL!
