This week in 5th grade we are learning about Solidarity- one of the seven principles of Catholic Social Teaching. Students demonstrated this idea by linking arms and noticing how we are stronger when we're together!

🥞🫐🍳 Annual Family Breakfast Caps Off Catholic Schools Week at SMS

St. Mary School families enjoyed their annual tradition of the Home School Association (HSA) Catholic Schools Week Breakfast this past Sun. morning. The breakfast was once again generously hosted by the St. Mary's Knights of Columbus Council 17530, who prepared all of the delicious food! Fluffy pancakes, fresh fruit, scrumptious pastries, scrambled eggs & the Knight's famous homemade sausage links were served.

The breakfast not only provided our families with full bellies, but full hearts too, as there were opportunities for service to our community. Each year the HSA asks families to bring a non-perishable food item with them to the breakfast for donation to WNY food pantries through the parish's St. Vincent DePaul Society. Students also made Valentines Day cards for veterans while they were seated at their breakfast tables.

While the breakfast annually marks the end of National Catholic Schools Week, we had so many fun events this past week that the posts will keep coming! Watch our social media pages for more fun updates about our Catholic Schools Week events.

Recently at St. Mary's weekend Masses, members of our SMS Class of 2026 spoke about how SMS has impacted their lives. Let's hear what 8th grader, Henry S. had to say:

"Hello, my name is Henry. I am here today to tell you about my time at St. Mary’s. I have been a student here since I was 3 in Montessori Pre-K. During my time here I have participated in many activities and other school events.

I have had the opportunity to play a variety of sports during my time at St. Mary's. Starting in Kindergarten, I was on the swim, bowling, and track teams. Starting in 1st grade, I have been on our St. Mary’s soccer team each spring. I have been a member of our basketball team since 3rd grade. I have really enjoyed having the opportunity to play so many different sports, and have enjoyed being able to play with my classmates.

There are also many other activities that I have had the opportunity to participate in, other than just sports. I was a member of the school band, playing the drums. I have also participated in many of our Drama Club productions. My favorite club that I have been involved in is our Middle School Chess Club.

St. Mary’s has also provided a strong academic foundation, that I feel has prepared me well for high school next year. I am currently taking Regents Biology and Regents Algebra, which will help me to progress into advanced classes in high school. I have also had the opportunity to participate in the Diocesan Math Competition. One of my favorite parts about this school is the small class sizes which have allowed me to get individual attention from our caring and supportive teachers.

My favorite part of being a student at St. Mary’s is how everything is always faith centered. We begin our day every morning with a school wide prayer led by the eighth graders, and end our day by saying the Hail Mary together. One of my favorite experiences at St. Mary’s is our yearly Living Stations of the Cross production, that fourth grade presents during Lent. Afterward, the whole school gathers in the school gym to participate in games that are designed and run by the middle school students. This is always something I look forward to because it brings students of all grades together, to pray together, and then celebrate together. Keeping God at the center of our school and social activities is something I feel is very important.

Being focused on God is something that I think is very important, and is a trait that I want to bring with me to St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute, where I am planning on going to high school next year.

Thank you for your time."

Click the link below to send a pre-written email to Gov. Hochul, urging her to opt in to the new Federal Scholarship Tax Credit that will let taxpayers redirect up to $1,700 of their federal income taxes to nonprofit scholarship organizations that provide tuition assistance for students in Catholic schools. New York families will miss out unless the governor opts in! Governor Hochul’s participation would bring new scholarship dollars to Catholic schools, easing financial pressure on families and expanding access to faith-based education.
