SMS 8th graders delivered smiles and the gift of play to patients at Golisano Children's Hospital of Buffalo! This group of dedicated 8th graders chose to create "Jared Boxes" for pediatric patients as their service project for the year.
Service projects are a part of 8th grade religion class at SMS. Mrs. Julie Leong works with the 8th graders to develop the projects, but once a project is chosen it is entirely student led. Students are required to identify a need, make all necessary contacts, clear dates with the school, determine participants, manage volunteers, and tap into many other skills needed for successful project management. Some projects they have developed are school-wide, while others involve just the 8th grade or another class or small group.
The Jared Box Project was started in 2001 by the children of Our Lady of Victory School in State College, Pennsylvania, to honor their classmate and friend, Jared. He was a brave little boy who battled cancer with courage and faith. Since then, more than 1,000,000 Jared Boxes have been delivered to over 500 hospitals across the United States. Boxes filled with the “gift of play” are given to young patients in emergency rooms, hospital rooms, surgical centers and clinics.

It's hard to believe our Magnificat Gala was already over a week ago! Students are starting to "cash in" the experiences their families won in our silent & live auctions, and are having so much fun!
Thank you to Josie L.'s family for bidding on & winning Mrs. Wojtaszek's donated experience - "Dine in the classroom with dessert!" Josie & a friend were able to dress down, eat lunch in the 2nd grade classroom, & take home a treat bag. Mrs. Wojtaszek even provided a special dessert! Possibly the best part though was the Macaw stuffy Josie gets to keep at the end of the school year.

🐄🧈 You BUTTER believe it - grade 2 is having fun learning about all things dairy! Mrs. Wojtaszek's class is participating in the Milk for Heath “Cow for Now” program through the Niagara Frontier, & made butter recently using a small container, heavy cream & lots of shaking power - delicious!
Grade 2 will also follow along on the life of a cow named "Hattie" who lives on a dairy farm in Corfu to learn more about the WNY dairy industry & how agriculture plays a role in our communities. We can't wait to see what moo-velous project they explore next!
